VAT increase affects people's spending

Spring results show consumers continue to struggle

April 13, 2011 - PRLog -- As might be expected, the VAT rise to 20% in January has had a real impact on consumer spending habits, with many retailers announcing poor results this spring. A new survey and report by online sales giant eBay bears out these facts. It says two out of five people have been deliberately cutting back on buying goods since the start of the year.

The survey asked more than 2,000 adults, finding that most people had less money to spend, blaming either this government or the last. Half of those questioned said the higher rate of VAT had made a noticeable impact on their cost of living. Clare Gilmartin, vice-president of European Marketplaces at eBay, said: "While the recent VAT rise only had a short-term negative impact on consumer spending, we know consumers are still feeling the pain as they are budgeting to ensure they can afford basic necessities."
