April 12, 2011 - PRLog -- $1.8 million. That’s how much families saved by purchasing food through the SHARE Food Buying Club during its 2009–10 fiscal year. As April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month, SHARE would like to salute the amazing dedication of over 1,000 volunteers who make the program’s savings on food possible.

SHARE is a nonprofit volunteer-run food buying club that’s been helping families save 30-50% on groceries for over 25 years. There are no income limits or eligibility guidelines to purchase food through SHARE. Families place orders at the beginning of the month and pick their food up at a location near them toward the end of the month.

SHARE volunteers express their dedication to their communities every month of the year. They promote the program by making phone calls, sending emails and distributing flyers. They collect and aggregate orders. SHARE volunteer leaders recruit, train and support other volunteers to make the food distribution run smoothly. They unload food, count food, pack food, and help get it out to members’ vehicles.

While all the tasks that SHARE volunteers take responsibilities for are impressive and the results are even more amazing, in many ways the most profound difference volunteers make is more subtle. As they do their work, SHARE volunteers connect with people from all walks of life. They express compassion for others in their communities, serving them with dignity and respect.

Of course, April is not the only month that volunteers make a difference. They do so every month of the year. SHARE offers a monthly selection of frozen meats, fresh fruits and vegetables, convenience items, organic produce and more…all at a significant savings compared to typical supermarket prices.

SHARE is now accepting orders for pick-up in May. Families can order online at www.sharewi.org through May 8, or they can call toll-free 800-548-2124 to order by May 6. Pick-up will be held on Saturday, May 21 at most SHARE sites.

SHARE’s online ordering system accepts debit and credit card payments, while the local volunteer team and main office can also accept cash, check, money order and Quest/Link/Bridge (food stamp) cards.
