PRLog - April 11, 2011 - ATLANTA -- For women separated from their children due to drug and alcohol abuse, the relationship between the Salvation Army of Sarasota (SA-S) and the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) offers critical lifelines: shelter, accountability and—importantly—
Lori Little's "Hope & Help for the Single Mom"
Little teaches her “21 Principles” for the teen, never married, divorced or widowed single mom through a combination of books for individual study and DVDs for groups, both featuring personal interviews Little conducted with Christian leaders: Kay Arthur, previously a single mother; Dr. Charles Stanley, raised by a single mom; along with Jill Briscoe; Elizabeth George; Michelle McKinney Hammond and Dr. John Trent to name a few.
The program was spearheaded by Sarasotan, Linda Kelleher, a single mom for 13 years. Kelleher volunteers with South Shore Community Church which offered the “21 Principles” study to the community including the women in the SA-S’s VIPER Program (Voluntary Interim Placement-Enhanced Recovery).
“These women are working hard to earn back the title as ‘Mom,’” said Kelleher. “I’m a single mom, so I have a passion for the special needs of other single moms. Lori’s ‘21 Principles’ course gave me significant peace and I knew the ladies in my classes needed that, too.”
Kelleher introduced the course to the SA-S and DCF and it was approved for a “soft” introduction, meaning the “21 Principles” counted as a certificate course only if women requested credit for the class. Amazingly, the unadvertised option was spontaneously requested by all who knew about the accreditation.
“The Salvation Army’s distinctly Christian approach to providing community support made Lori Little’s ‘Hope & Help for the Single Mom’ a great fit,” said Dr. David Sutton, Director of Programs and Facilities, SA-S. “Lori’

“The trials of being a single mom have been the most difficult ones of my life. I found myself being homeless, penniless and in court fighting a custody case for my son. I was extremely overwhelmed from all that I had to do. I often cried out to God saying, ‘Oh God, when is this hell on earth of being a single mom going to end?’” [Principle #20: Laughter, page 160]
