The "Grand Old Lady" that is the Sunnyside Park Hotel in Parktown

Many citizens are unaware of the Monument status of the 4 Star Sunnyside Park Hotel and the Grand History behind it, which makes it a unique hotel in Johannesburg

PRLog - Apr. 11, 2011 - JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- In 1895 the Sunnyside Park Hotel was built as a house by a Mining Magnet and became the home of Lord Milner, who was the British High Commissioner at the start of the Anglo Boer War.  He lived in the house for 5 years before returning to England.  The House was part of an Estate with rolling gardens with no Sandton etc inbetween Johannesburg and Pretoria, therefore Lord Milner could virtually see the Boers coming from Pretoria!

In 1893 the British Fort was built, which now of course, is part of Constitutional Hill, but as the British Fort, Lord Milner in his stately home, was not too far from his troops.

Johannesburg , a young city, was built by Miners digging for Gold, and these days the Northern Suburbs are deemed to be the Suburbs of the Elite and everything South to be Middle to Low Class, BUT, the underground Gold was and is not under the Northern Suburbs but in the Eastern, Western and Southern Suburbs!

Parktown, where the Sunnyside Park Hotel is located, is a very leafy suburb of Johannesburg with many Historical buildings in the surrounds, but many of them not accessible or viewable, sadly, which makes the Hotel unique plus it still has large beautiful gardens, with enormous trees.

The Sunnyside Park Hotel with it's Victorian decor and feel, mixed with modern day, truly is a Grand Old Lady and has housed many a memorable gathering for the local and international visitor and still attracts to this day, even if just to say " I remember when..."

The 4 Star Hotel has 154 bedrooms and 11 conference rooms, housing up to 200 delegates schoolroom style seating, some leading out onto the gardens, have natural light which not many modern day hotels, being close to Cities, can boast.
The access to the Hotel too is easy and convenient with 3 exits from the M1 North to choose from.

Fact - a few years ago, I was passing by Reception, when I heard an American Guest, who was checking out, speaking to our Receptionists and he said, quote "staying in this hotel was lovely as it is unique in Johannesburg and is not like staying in one of the hotels that could be any where in the world" unquote - that sealed it all for me, I must admit and I use this in my Sales patter sometimes!

Trivia - In 1969, Sol Kerzner, who founded the Southern Sun Hotel Group, bought the Sunnyside Park Hotel, and it remained with Southern Sun until 2001 when it was sold to the Chairman of Maple Star Hotels.  This was one of Mr Kerzner's first hotels in Johannesburg.
