Knowledge & Information Management specialists from Schlumberger Shell and Talengi meet in Aberdeen

In a set of recent Interviews with Oil & Gas IQ, Andy Boyd talked about ROCK, Shell's Retention of Critical Knowledge programme, which they've put in place to mitigate the effects of the impending crew change - something knowledge managers at major oil & gas organisations are very much aware of: "... if you don't tackle this head on, it's a question mark whether you're going to be able to run your business in a few years' time, because you've lost so much expertise."

Susan Rosenbaum offered her insights as to how she sees KM developing at Schlumberger and the wider oil and gas industry in the years ahead: “I think that KM will continue to play an important role in the oil and gas industry in the future. With the ever-increasing technical challenges that we face in our business, the sharing of technical knowledge and technical know-how will be increasingly critical.”

Matthieu Lamy, in turn, highlighted the importance of document controllers and how the role evolved in the past 15 years: “Document controllers in the past were basically managing paper documents. […] Today we still have document controllers that basically register and check documents but more and more the role is evolving into a more global consultant position. […] You will see more and more ISKM consultants within document control I think.”
