April 11, 2011 - PRLog -- This year’s programme includes brand new case studies from the industry's most progressive leaders including Andy Boyd (Knowledge Sharing Team Lead, Shell Projects and Technology) on how you can Manage knowledge transfer to ensure you retain decades worth of experience for the future workforce, Susan Rosenbaum (Director of Knowledge Management, Schlumberger) on Over a decade of knowledge management in Schlumberger: What we have learned and what we are still learning? and Matthieu Lamy (Document Control Manager, Talengi) on Document control: Information management on engineering projects.

In a set of recent Interviews with Oil & Gas IQ, Andy Boyd talked about ROCK, Shell's Retention of Critical Knowledge programme, which they've put in place to mitigate the effects of the impending crew change - something knowledge managers at major oil & gas organisations are very much aware of: "... if you don't tackle this head on, it's a question mark whether you're going to be able to run your business in a few years' time, because you've lost so much expertise."

Susan Rosenbaum offered her insights as to how she sees KM developing at Schlumberger and the wider oil and gas industry in the years ahead: “I think that KM will continue to play an important role in the oil and gas industry in the future. With the ever-increasing technical challenges that we face in our business, the sharing of technical knowledge and technical know-how will be increasingly critical.”

Matthieu Lamy, in turn, highlighted the importance of document controllers and how the role evolved in the past 15 years: “Document controllers in the past were basically managing paper documents. […] Today we still have document controllers that basically register and check documents but more and more the role is evolving into a more global consultant position. […] You will see more and more ISKM consultants within document control I think.”

Both interviews are available to download for free from the KIM event website (www.kimoilandgas.com), plus a two part interview with Chris Collison, Knowledge Management consultant and author, formerly of BP and Centrica, on knowledge management. For transcripts please email rosa.cortez@iqpc.co.uk.

Other expert speakers on the programme include Colin Balchin and Nigel Barnes, Adept Knowledge Management, Luca Scagliarini, Expert System, and Alf Michaelsenm, Logica. The event is sponsored by McLaren Software, and confirmed delegates include representatives from ADDAX Petroleum, Baker Hughes, Chevron, Exxon Mobil, Nexen Petroleum UK Ltd., Statoil, SUBSEA 7 and TOTAL EP.

Commenting ahead of the event, Richard Gibson, Event Director, said “The Knowledge and Information Management conference is a great opportunity for oil and gas professionals to come together in an intimate setting and discuss the very latest issues that matter to them. It's a very innovative sector, always developing and adapting to the changing needs of the market. I'm really looking forward to seeing what everyone has to say and I'm sure there'll be some fascinating debate.”
