Years of SEO efforts down the drain for Sydney small business

A Sydney small business failed to do proper research when revamping their website and lost over half a million dollars

April 10, 2011 - PRLog -- Kevin Bates, a lifelong amateur gardener,  dreamed of opening a small plants nursery in his later years. Retrenchment at 56 and a hefty payout meant his dream became a reality.
"I didn't see it coming, but I seized the chance". Kevin opened Kev's Gardens on Sydney's north-side in 2002. In 2003 his son advised him to get a himself a website.
"It was the best thing I ever did". It so happened that the person who created Kevin's website knew a lot about SEO and implemented some of the best practices at time.
"All the suddenly we were deluged with customers-had to employ two sales assistants in six months". It soon became obvious why: His website was ranking high on search engines, "they found me on the net" Kevin commented to us.
Business grew and Kevin was sold on the idea of a flashier website. No-one explained to Kevin the pitfalls and risks. "The website looked amazing, i was thrilled".
Then something happened, "Business dried up, just like that, I didn't know what I was doing wrong, then my son told me: my rankings were gone, in fact the site was even dropped from Google altogether for a while". it turned out the new website developer knew a lot about design and  nothing of SEO-none of the good practices built in to the last website were carried over. The new website was not at all search engine friendly.
"It is essential before making any change to a website that is doing well on natural search a thorough analysis is done and all efforts are made to ensure that none of the websites search engine friendly attributes are tampered with" notes Mr Michael Cohen, Director of international SEO firm Excellenseo http://www.excellenseo.com.
"I probably lost half a million dollars, I didn't know enough about the topic. Franly I knew nothing. I hope others might learn from my mistake" concluded Kevin.
