April 8, 2011 - PRLog -- New York – In celebration of National Volunteer Week 2011, The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. (AJLI) is honoring its more than 155,000 women volunteers across four countries, who work tirelessly and without credit to improve the lives of women, support families and build their communities.  Their day-to-day efforts are the extension of a 110-year legacy of civic service begun by New York socialite Mary Harriman in 1901, which has since extended to 292 independent Leagues in the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and Mexico.

“For more than a century, Junior League volunteers have played a key role in redefining what a woman’s role in society can be,” said Delly Beekman, President, AJLI. “With April 10 marking the start of National Volunteer week 2011, we’d like to take this time to extend our gratitude to all of our members, who donate so much of their time and effort to bring lasting change to their towns, cities and neighborhoods, and improve the lives of their fellow citizens.”

Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week (http://www.nationalserviceresources.org/calendar/national...) has grown over the decades, and now draws on the support and endorsement of prominent companies and charitable organizations across the United States, as well as U.S. presidents, governors, mayors and other elected officials.  The event is focused on recognizing those who find imaginative ways to engage in their communities, while inspiring others to serve and drive social change.
