April 8, 2011 - PRLog -- The spotlight of National Autism Awareness Month makes April a time for understanding how autism affects our personal lives and our greater communities. On Thursday, April 21, the OPC Area Program will present a lecture at Extraordinary Ventures (EV) from 1pm-3pm, detailing the future of autism in Chapel Hill and beyond.

Jim Bodfish, Ph.D., the Thomas E. Castelloe Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at UNC Chapel Hill, will present “Autism: advances, current challenges and future directions.” Dr. Bodfish will also discuss the work of the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities.

The OPC Area Program is a local government agency responsible for managing publicly-funded mental health and developmental disabilities services in the area. EV is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing jobs for teens and adults with autism and developmental disabilities.

“We’re excited about having Dr. Bodfish speak at OPC’s third annual Autism Awareness Lecture. Dr. Bodfish is a nationally renowned researcher, clinician and author,” said Peter Kramer, Community Planner for OPC.

The event will be free of charge and no pre-registration is necessary. For more information on EV’s services, visit EV’s website at http://www.extraordinaryventures.org, and for more information on the Autism Awareness Lecture, call Peter Kramer at (919) 913-4055.
