The company sold 26,916 vehicles last month – a 13 percent increase over March 2010.
“While we’re pleased to maintain sales growth, our thoughts are with our colleagues at Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. and the people of Japan as they continue to deal with the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami,” said Thomas Doll, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Subaru of America.
“On behalf of Fuji and SOA, we want to thank our retailers, vendors and suppliers for their tremendous support. We hope to have our factories running at normal production levels as soon as possible.”
As it continues struggling to receive a critical car part from Japan, Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc. in Lafayette is making work changes next week for the Subaru associates at its Lafayette plant.
SIA said production of the part has resumed in Japan, which was hit last month by an earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster. But the volume of production has not returned to its normal level.
On Monday and Friday of next week, Subaru production hours will be shifted from eight to four, with a full eight hours of work available for full-time associates and variable workforce personnel.
“The non-production time will be utilized primarily for Total Productive Maintenance projects, ‘kaizen’ work and training,” said a statement from SIA. “All full-time SIA (Subaru) associates will also be given the option of using their available Paid Time Off or taking excused unpaid time off in lieu of remaining for the four hours of non-production work.”
SIA will have regular eight hour Subaru production shifts on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week.
March sales among vehicles built at SIA showed:
• The Outback increased 38 percent over last year, to 10,498 units.
• The Legacy increased by 28 percent, to 4,450 units
• The Tribeca showed a 2 percent increase, to 248 units.
Sales of the Japanese-made Impreza rose by 3 percent last month, to 4,091 units; while sales of the Forester dropped 10 percent, to 7,629 units.
