Friends of Frying Pan Farm Park Honors Volunteers during National Volunteer Week

April 8, 2011 - PRLog -- [Herndon, Virginia]— National Volunteer Week is April 10th through April 16th and the Friends of Frying Pan Farm Park is honoring all of the volunteers – both service and fundraising volunteers -- who support its mission to “interpret the agricultural process and rural community life and landscape for the educational, cultural and recreational enrichment of citizens and visitors of Fairfax County.”

Mr. Jack Pitzer, President of the Friends of Frying Pan Farm Park said, “It’s important to honor all the volunteers who make it possible for us to accomplish our mission: the direct service volunteers at the farm, including everyone who helps with our special events at Farm Day, the equestrian events, and the music events, as well as the fundraising volunteers who plan and run the fundraising events.  We want to recognize the hard work and dedication of the youth, adult and senior citizen volunteers who help us keep the Park vibrant.”

This year is the 50th anniversary of Frying Pan Farm Park and there are a number of special events planned. Tawny Hammond, Park Manager, reports: In April, as part of both National Volunteer Week and the Earth Day celebrations, there are three special events at Frying Pan Farm Park:   

Watershed Cleanup Day, Saturday, April 9th, 9AM -11AM.  
Be part of the Potomac watershed regional cleanup! Individuals, students, families, Scouts and other community groups can help clear the earth’s arteries by collecting debris from our waterways. Give the waterways in our community a clean bill of health and earn the gratitude of your furred, feathered and scaled neighbors.
Come and bring your family and friends as we do our part to keep trash out of the Chesapeake Bay watershed.   This is a great way for families and youth groups to work together to make a difference in our community.
Wear boots and old clothes and bring gloves. Trash bags and appreciation provided. This is a great community service project for Scouts and youth groups!  Please call 703-437-9101 to reserve a section of the watershed for groups. Meet at the Visitor Center.

Farm Baby Day 10 A.M. – 3 P.M., Saturday, April 16th
Always a fun day at Kidwell Farm! See this year’s newest babies ranging from kids and lambs to chicks and cows. The Hoofers & Heifers 4-H Club members, all devoted volunteers, will answer questions about raising livestock.  Games and crafts will also be available. Free for all!

Historic Preservation - Cemetery Work Day, 9 A.M. – Noon, Saturday, April 30th
Work along side Fairfax County Cemetery Preservation Association to help preserve history at the cemetery located by Frying Pan Farm Park’s historical Meeting House. Participants will be clearing brush and cleaning headstones. Recommended clothing would include old clothes, hat and gloves. No bathrooms are available near the cemetery. Small stools and lawn chairs are also recommended for comfort.
