April 7, 2011 - PRLog -- On Saturday, April 9, the San Diego community will rally, rain or shine, to run in the San Diego Museum of Man’s first 5K run in Balboa Park in memory of long-time SDMoM trustee and Monarch School volunteer Alan Jaffe. The 5K run will be followed by the American Anthropological Association’s thought-provoking exhibit Race: Are We So Different?, looking at the history, science and experience of race. The goal of the Race for Race is to promote acceptance through education of people of all races and ethnicities, with proceeds to support educational programs that will further Monarch School’s educational relationship with the San Diego Museum of Man. Monarch School is a public K-12 school for students impacted by homelessness, and a public-private partnership that fosters a quality education while supplementing students’ basic needs.

Sarita Fuentes, CEO and Co-Principal at Monarch School, noted, “We are honored to be a beneficiary of the first ‘Race for Race’ 5K run. The San Diego Museum of Man has been a strong supporter of Monarch over the years through educational tours and bringing the Museum into our classrooms. In addition, Alan Jaffe was an amazing volunteer at Monarch who loved spending time with our students. To honor Alan’s dedication to our programs, Monarch faculty, staff and students will be participating in the race. We want to extend our appreciation to Alan’s family for their continued support and hope the participation of our students will bring Alan’s family a small token of the happiness he brought to Monarch.”

Monarch School will break ground on its new campus this fall in Barrio Logan, just south of Petco Park, to serve more than double its current student population. With more than 13,000 homeless children identified in San Diego County, the need to provide a rigorous education and additional support to this underserved population is greater than ever.  For more information about Monarch School and opportunities to donate and volunteer, visit http://monarchschools.org or call (619) 685-8242, ext. 226.
