April 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Today, the Mutual Fund Site published a list of 10 equity mutual funds to watch in 2011. While none of the funds on its list (which represents roughly 20% of all of the funds covered at the Site) include its Top Pick for 2011, each was required to meet strict criteria for inclusion on the list.

"We feel that the criteria set was extremely strict," elaborated Chris Blanchet, the Fund Advisor and Editor for the Site. "These ten funds are extremely well qualified for this list, many of which could have easily been our Top Pick for 2011. So, for the discerning investor who wants alternatives to our Top Pick, this list is an ideal starting point."

The website has taken a bullish view on Equity Funds (visit: http://www.mutualfundsite.org/category/mutualfunds/growth-funds-mutualfunds for the Mutual Fund Site's latest posts on Equity Funds) given the improved domestic economic climate, according to information found at the site. This has ultimately led to the Site award the Franklin Growth Fund as its Top Pick for 2011.

Interestingly, only six of the ten funds listed on the Site's Watch List (visit http://www.mutualfundsite.org/top-10-growth-mutual-funds-... for the full list and details) have outperformed the S&P 500 on a year-to-date (YTD) basis, according to data and charts publishes on the website.

"Of course, not every mutual fund is best benchmarked against the S&P 500," Blanchet wrote in a statement. "With that in mind, of the four funds that have underperformed one is about to overtake the index, one is an Asian fund that continues to deal with fallout relating to the Tsunami, one is only marginally underperforming the Index and the fourth is a fund facing tremendous issues and is arguably one of the biggest upsets in the investment world right now."

When  questioned whether he was surprised about the Ivy Small Cap Value Fund, the Site's Top Pick for last year, underperforming that same Index (it is also listed on the Site's Watch List for 2011), Blanchet replied that "the [Ivy Small Cap Value Fund] remains one of the best plays for its category with relatively low risk and high returns. Its track record speaks for itself.

"And our track record speaks for itself," he finished, citing how last year's less-elaborate but better balanced picks outperformed the index. "We believe that strong underlying assets make for a strong foundation. That is how we pick our funds. I also believe we will see strong performance from the majority of those funds on the Watch List and our success ratio will improve greatly over the course of the year."
