Market Report, "Austria Commercial Banking Report Q2 2011", published

April 7, 2011 - PRLog -- Weak Growth Ahead  The recovery in the Austrian banking sector is slowly starting to materialise, in keeping with our view  that the worst is over for the country's lenders. We expect asset and loan growth to creep higher through  2011 as businesses and households begin to demand more credit, in line with a firming economic  recovery. That said, we stress that the Austrian banking sector is highly unlikely to return to pre-crisis  levels of growth any time soon, with expansion opportunities in traditional Eastern European markets  likely to be severely limited compared to the pre-crisis years.  The Austrian banking sector continued to shrink in 2010, in line with our view that a strong recovery is  firmly off the cards. Total assets came in at EUR987.5bn in Q310, down by 5.7% year-on-year (y-o-y),  following from a 1.9% drop the previous quarter. We estimate that assets contracted by 3.0% y-o-y in  2010, on the back of a 3.3% drop in 2009. While we expect some improvement in 2011, we forecast fairly  weak asset growth of 4.1%, and they are not expected to return to 2008 levels until 2012.    Despite the bleak headline figures, however, we stress that signs of improvement are starting to  materialise. Lending growth rose for the second consecutive quarter in Q310, up by 1.0% y-o-y, on the  back of a 0.9% uptick in Q2. This brought the loan-to-asset ratio to 0.43%, the highest level since Q407.  We estimate that loans grew by 1.2% in 2010 and forecast a 3.5% increase in 2011 as the recovery firms and households and businesses continue to demand more credit. Our macroeconomic  outlook includes 2.0% real GDP growth in 2011, indicating a fairly robust recovery, particularly in  investment and exports.
