April 6, 2011 - PRLog -- DALLAS, TX – HPD Design for Living LLC, an architectural, interior design, and construction firm that offers personalized guidance and options to seniors and individuals with disabilities who face challenges living in their homes, announces its opening in Dallas. By assessing client needs and priorities, HPD Design for Living provides design, installation and construction solutions that allow individuals to live more independently and comfortably in familiar surroundings.

Traditionally, the majority of seniors desire to remain in their own homes as opposed to moving to other locations. This sentiment has become even stronger today. In the current global and economic landscape, people are living and working longer. According to the U.S. Census, for example, almost 78 million Baby Boomers are turning 65 this year. Yet, instead of retiring, they are continuing to work in either their current jobs or choosing new occupational ventures. As they age, many of these Boomers, from both financial and emotional perspectives, will maintain their independence and prefer to remain in their own homes. However, often the homes are not designed to accommodate aging needs. For individuals who have disability and/or mobility challenges, their homes frequently have similar design roadblocks that prevent accessible and functional living.

HPD Design for Living provides solutions that incorporate two key design approaches, Universal Design and Aging-in-Place. Universal Design is “the design of products and environments that are usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.”  Aging-in-Place refers to “living in one’s home safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level.”  A Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) is trained on the unique needs of seniors, addressing the most common barriers in a home and modifying their environments so that they may live there longer as they age.

“As residential architects and interior designers, we have worked with clients through various stages of their lives, some over the course of 25 years,” said Holly Hall, AIA, CAPS and president, HPD Design for Living. “As their mobility and related priorities have changed and continue to evolve, we recognized the opportunity to help them make the most of where they live by designing and renovating their environments to accommodate their needs.”

HPD Design for Living employs the following step-by-step process with clients:
•   In-Home Consultation – discuss client’s current and future needs and priorities along with budget to invest in their home
•   Home Assessment – evaluation of the home’s interior and exterior areas that may need to be modified; the owner receives a written report detailing the results
•   Design – development of the best design for client’s priorities and budget
•   Installation and/or Construction – implementation of design modification project; discussion with client regarding schedule, timing, and overall expectations
