Milk and Bookies - teaching our kids about generosity

Ekklesia Church at Raleigh hosted a Milk and Bookies event where books were given by kids to kids without access to books of their own. At the event, books became more than covers, bindings, words and illustrations. They became an act of love.

April 6, 2011 - PRLog -- The idea started with a few moms in Los Angeles who wanted to inspire their kids to give by using books as currency. The idea is simple. Select, purchase and inscribe books to give away to kids who don’t have access to any books of their own. And so was born Milk and Bookies.

Each month at Ekklesia – a local Raleigh church meeting at Athens Drive High School – the Children’s Ministry holds an Agape Sunday, a day dedicated to serving others. For the month of March, they hosted their own Milk and Bookies event. From Berenstain Bears to Veggie Tales to Goodnight Moon to Transformers™, books became more than covers, bindings, words and illustrations. They became an act of love, a smile, hope, and tools that taught kids to love and to live more like Jesus. To become His hands and His feet.

While Jesus never said, “I wanted something to read and you gave me a book,” the heart of this concept is very much in line with Jesus words in Matthew 25, “I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink.”

About the event, a thirteen-year-old middle school volunteer at Ekklesia said, “It was so cool to see children, some of whom weren't even two yet, coloring and loving on others, and enjoying themselves.” The inscribed books were given to residents at the Raleigh Rescue Mission women’s shelter – a place where the church serves regularly.

A catch phrase you will hear often at their 10:30am services is “Sunday is not the main event.” They believe the real measure of Sunday’s success is found in what happens the rest of the week; that Monday through Saturday should be just as compelling and beautiful as Sunday; and that the surrounding communities and neighborhoods should be better because the church is there. Milk and Bookies is one such way Ekklesia is aiming to make this true.

About Ekklesia Church at Raleigh:

Ekklesia is the greek word for church. And like many words with a different origin, the original greek word Ekklesia carries meanings and nuances that our word church doesn't.

The word 'church' native to our western culture, connotes a place or a building. The word ekklesia, native to ancient Greek culture, connotes people and community. One implies brick and mortar; the other implies flesh and blood.

Buildings stand; people move. We want to be a church that moves.
