The bubbly teenager’s entire world was turned upside down by a potentially devastating condition that can strike at any time and any place.
Ironically the brave young Lancashire lass was determined to battle on, and with hard work and the support of friends and family she eventually not only came to terms with the condition, but became a expert in living with it.
“I went into hairdressing because I wanted to understand what had happened to me and somehow learn to live with my hair loss,” recalled 52 years old Shirley. “But I also wanted to learn as much as possible about alopecia so I could help others with the condition.”
Today Shirley is the owner of My Second Image, a leading hair salon and wig consultancy based in Cleveleys, which enables women from across the UK to live life to the full despite their hair loss.
“We do that by giving help and advice and providing high quality wigs that look real, feel real and are comfortable to wear at all times,” added Shirley who has recently become one of the first salons in the country to introduce the new Feather Premier Collection from wigs specialists Dimples.
“These are state-of-the-
“After all, if I had my hair it would be grey, I’d need to work hard keeping it in condition. In fact the whole thing would be inconvenient. Instead I have my wonderful Stephanie wig from the Feather Premier Collection which looks stylish and fashionable and which is so comfortable I forget I’m wearing it.
“What’s more, I don’t need to go to a hairdresser and when I want a different hairstyle, I just choose another style of wig from my Feather Premier collection.”
Shirley said the new wigs were proving very popular with her clients and she is particularly proud of the fact that she is now an official supplier to the NHS.
A spokesman for Dimples in Manchester said: “We are absolutely delighted that the Feather Premier Collection is proving popular with Shirley’s clients. Shirley is key customer of ours and one whose personal experience gives her a unique insight into the importance of customer’s choosing the right wig.
