Poole sailor heads out into the Superyacht Industry

A high ranking career in the superyacht industry has moved one step closer for Poole sailor Lewis Smith.

April 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Officer trainee Lewis (20) is currently studying on a three year Yachting Cadetship with Isle of Wight maritime charity UKSA.

Cadetship training is a combination of shoreside training at UKSA and in paid work placements aboard some of the world’s largest superyachts. Lewis has now completed his first phase of shoreside training and has started a year’s placement in the industry on a 28m sail yacht in the Mediterranean.

“Many young people chose the Cadetship and a career in superyachting over going to university.” says UKSA Cadet Co-ordinator Emma Baggett.

“When employing a Cadet such as Lewis, a captain gains a reliable crewmember prepared to work hard and consistently.”

The next intake for Officer trainees is October 2011. There are opportunities for motivated young people like Lewis to apply for funding from Trinity House and its Professional Yachtsman Bursary Scheme (PYBS).

The funding will allow successful applicants to have 75% of their course fees paid and receive a maintenance grant to help them through their studies.

Applications for funding need to be submitted by April 30.

For more information or to apply for the Cadetship and Trinity House funding,  please visit http://www.uksa.org/trinityhouse or call UKSA on 01983 203034.
