American Idol: Poll of Younger Viewers Reveals Surprise Favorites

PRLog (Press Release) - Apr. 5, 2011 - Nashville, TN (April 5, 2011) --  Kids 8-12 years old (“tweens”) are a generation that consumes music like no generation before them. So what do they think about this year’s American Idol contestants?   In a poll that was open briefly over the weekend the popular online kids game Franktown Rocks asked their players “Who do you hope wins American Idol this season?”.    Over 3,200 kids responded and offered some interesting results.  

Leading the poll is 20-year old Casey Abrams, the quirky, bearded bass-playing contestant who only made it into the Top 10 because of the judges save.  Lauren Alaina, the 16-year old from Georgia with the country twang is a close second.  Interestingly, Stefano Langone, arguably the contestant with the most mainstream tween-pop style (a la Bruno Mars) came in last place by a wide margin.

Franktown Rocks founder and CEO Rob Solberg says he considers Casey’s high popularity among tweens to be a great sign that the younger generation is open to more than the slick pop music foisted on them by Top 40 radio.  “And we love that because that’s a big part of our mission with Franktown Rocks; we want to expose kids to great music, period.”

Franktown Rocks has started an online poll to allow kids to vote for their favorite contestants each week at www.FranktownRocks.com/vote.  “This will be very interesting because as you watch the results show on TV you can see if the tweens got it right as far as who is in the bottom 3 and who gets voted off,” says Solberg.  “And even more, you’ll be able to see how many votes each contestant got, which is something they don’t reveal on the show.”   Indeed, TV viewers never really know if it’s a close race, or if one of the contestants is dominating because they don’t reveal what percentage of the vote each contestant got.
