April 5, 2011 - PRLog -- San Diego-based company Sportaneous, the brainchild of three SD natives, won the grand prize for popular choice and second prize overall in this year’s NYC Big Apps 2.0, a competition created by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to recognize software that utilizes NYC Data Sets to create thoughtful applications that create social impact while helping the city to be transparent, accessible, and accountable.

The mobile application and website that urges users to “Be Sportaneous” won recognition for using public data to allow users to arrange and play spontaneous pickup sports games with the help of location-based technology to match players with team sports games that fit his or her unique schedule, location and skill level.

“Our goal for Sportaneous is to keep people active by fostering a social environment that encourages physical activity,” said Aaron Royston, co-founder of Sportaneous. “Taking home two major wins in the Big Apps competition cements in our minds that this app has the potential to get people moving and in turn, keep them healthy.”

The competition boasting prizes of up to $20,000 judged entries on criteria including quality of the idea, implementation of the idea, potential impact, and potential for commercialization. Judges included Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter; Naveen Selvadurai, co-founder of Foursquare; and Ian Robertson, chairman of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, Ltd.

The app launched exclusively in San Diego in January to take advantage of the region’s optimal weather conditions for outdoor sports and is now available in New York City with planned expansion to San Francisco and Philadelphia later this year.
