Aderma® - enabling nurses to work more efficiently

April 5, 2011 - PRLog -- An article published within the Daily Mail last week titled “Why in the 21st Century are NHS patients dying in agony from     bedsores?” highlights the harrowing experiences some patients endure whilst in the care of the NHS.

In relation to pressure ulcers (bed sores) nurses used to spend a proportion of their time turning, cleaning, moisturising and talcing a patient’s prominent areas in order to prevent the formation of an ulcer. In the 21st century, this amount of time is  reduced as new technologies, like Aderma®, are readily available and help to  prevent such conditions.

This poses two questions:
1) Why are there more pressure ulcers now than there were 40 years ago and 2) Do nurses believe they can now solely rely on such devices that they no longer need to look at the skin and talk to patients to identify areas of pain and discomfort?

Even with such products as the Aderma® range available, which in a recent evaluation at a large acute trust reduced the                incidence of pressure ulcers by 87% over a 3 month period saving the trust £125K, a patient’s skin still needs to be looked at and monitored daily. Doing so enables early recognition of the formation of a pressure ulcer which is essential in putting  preventative measures, like Aderma®, in to place.

Identifying the formation of a pressure ulcer before the tissue starts to break down is the only point where the damage can be reversed. In a recent high definition ultrasound scan Aderma® was proven to help reverse category 1 pressure ulcers when identified early enough which resulted in completely bypassing the debilitating effects of an ulcer and improving patient safety and their time in care. Evading such conditions allows for a nurse’s time to be freed to deal with other duties whilst simultaneously offering a cost effective solution to pressure ulcer prevention.
