PRLog (Press Release) - Apr. 5, 2011 - Bank Reforms Commendable But May Pose Hidden Risks  The implementation of the banking reforms by the Australian treasury, such as moves to prohibit  anticompetitive price signalling, may boost the participation of smaller banks and non-bank lenders. That  said, there is a risk that some measures, including the utilisation of covered loans as a fundraising method,  could actually strengthen the major players' dominance and widen Australia's exposure to propertyrelated  risks.  In a bid to boost competition in the highly concentrated Australian banking sector, the government has  introduced a series of financial reforms. The proposed measures are aimed at assisting Australia's smaller  lenders in competing against the 'big four': Westpac, Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA),  Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) and National Australia Bank (NAB).  Collectively, they account for 74.2% of total banking assets in the country. In light of the concentrated  nature of the Australian financial services industry, we believe such competitive measures will be  necessary to ensure the stability of the sector and the economy in general.
