Dragonfly Designs, a socially conscious jewelry company, has partnered with Nest, an organization of artists helping artists to lead communities out of poverty. This summer, Stacee Gillelen, owner of Dragonfly Designs, will travel with two of her daughters, Giana, age 12 and Bryn, age 11, to the Dominican Republic through a six-week Nest fellowship program. The Gillelens were selected to represent Nest to teach entrepreneurial skills needed to sustain an art-based sewing cooperative in the Dominican Republic. The girls also hope to utilize their expertise and teach the local children jewelry making techniques.
“As a mom, it's incredibly important to me that my own children learn to give of themselves to others and respect peoples and cultures from around the globe,” said Stacee. “And as a woman artist and entrepreneur, it's incredibly important to me to do what I can to help other women artisans develop sustainable business models in the arts. I'm certain that what we will receive in the way of learning, growing and developing new friendships will far outweigh anything we may have to offer."
“I've had a lot of creative influences in my life and I love how art helps me think more creatively, said Giana. “I am hoping to teach the women and children in the Dominican Republic some jewelry making skills for fun since that's what my mom's company does and I now enjoy teaching these skills to others.”
“I didn't realize how important this trip would be in my life until a few months ago when my mom explained how lucky we were to be chosen,” said Bryn. “I'm refreshing my Spanish skills to be able to communicate better and hope to be able to do lots of work with children while we are there.”
