The Tiger Population in India is Increasing

Some excellent new figures for the tiger population in India have been released by the Indian government, showing the tiger numbers have increased by 20% over the past 5 years.

April 5, 2011 - PRLog -- There’s good news for conservationists and the tiger population in India as new figures have been released showing that tiger numbers are actually rising in the country. At a time when forests continue to be cut down this is hugely promising news, giving hope that perhaps humans and wild animals can live happily together, even in situations where the animal is a large predator, such as the tiger.

What’s more, this news gives added hope and encouragement to tiger campaigns in other countries, such as those aimed at helping to save the Bengal Tiger - http://www.animaladoptions.org.uk/bengal-tiger

In 2006 India’s tiger population was recorded as 1,411 but India’s Ministry of Environment and Forests has just announced that the figure is now 1,706, around a 20% rise. A 20% decrease would have been incredibly worrying and most conservationists would have happily taken a similar figure to 2006, so a 20% increase is excellent news.

Of course, when compared to a century ago when there were around 100,000 tigers in India the figures aren’t so good, but an increase is still an increase.

Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh was naturally delighted but he did have a word of caution, saying:

“The threat from poachers, international smuggling networks and powerful mining companies continue to pose threat to the endangered animal.”

Therefore it is important that people continue to support tigers, and initiatives such as adoption packs from http://www.adoptatiger.org.uk do make a real difference in terms of providing charities with the necessary funds to carry out conservation work.
