April 3, 2011 - PRLog -- Following the successful passing of a new constitution, Kenya faces another test of its political stability following the naming by the International Criminal Court on December 15 of suspected masterminds of post-election violence in early 2008. For several reasons, we do not believe that the announcement poses a significant threat to short-term stability. However, should guilty verdicts be reached and arrest warrants issued, the risks would be elevated.

In economic terms the country continues to move from strength to strength with the latest available growth data from the National Bureau of Statistics showing that the economy expanded by 6.1% year-onyear in real terms in the third quarter of 2010. We believe that the combination of a favourable macroeconomic climate (low inflation, low interest rates and expansive fiscal policy) and positive investor sentiment will see the economy continue to perform strongly: we have revised up our growth forecasts to 6.0% for 2011 (from 5.4% previously) and 6.3% in 2012.

At the core of our sanguine view on the Kenyan economy is an expectation for robust growth in domestic consumption. The argument for Kenya's (and much of Africa's) private consumption potential is well heeled: a young, growing and increasingly wealthy population will demand ever larger quantities of consumer goods and services.

Kenya's tourism industry took a battering in 2007, when it was shaken by the discouraging effects of uncharacteristic political violence, followed almost immediately by the impact of the global financial crisis. The industry witnessed growth in 2010 and now looks set to shortly exceed historical highs in terms of visitor numbers and revenue figures.

Visitors to Kenya are largely drawn from other parts of Africa and head to the Indian Ocean beach areas surrounding Mombasa. This part of the tourist market is still to recover fully. A sizable number of tourists also travel from the UK, Europe and the US. There remains considerable potential for market growth by promoting Kenya in other parts of the world. The establishment of a new route serving Rome by Kenya Airways is a sign that the industry is slowly moving away from a reliance on UK visitors.

Kenya is also developing a position as a conference venue within East Africa. In January 2011, TPS East Africa, operator of Serena Hotels, announced that it had opened what it claims are East Africa's first public tele-presence suites. The suites, located in Kenya and Uganda, utilise Cisco technology.

Budget air carriers such as Fly540 are expanding to bring tourists from within Africa to the Mombasa region.
