Cufflinks for England and St George

UK Government suggests UK Day, GB Football team ....not likely!

April 3, 2011 - PRLog -- Saturday April 23rd  2011 sees the celebration of St George’s day in England.

A recent online petition to the UK government regards making St Georges day a bank holiday in England bought a response from Downing St suggesting there is greater need and more popularity for a “UK Day” or “Trafalgar Day”!

This is even more remarkable when we consider over 30 million St Georges flags were sold for the 2010 world cup. Online cufflinks site Collar and Cuff recorded a 400% increase in sales for St George branded products prior to the tournament.

Furthermore, the recent Wales v England European championship 2012 qualifier saw another increase in sales in not only flag cufflinks but tie slides as well.

So whilst the Irish celebrate St Patricks, the Welsh with St David’s and the Scots with St Andrews, the English sit in a quiet reserved acceptance of nostalgia of when knights were bold and fair maidens were rescued.

The recent UK government census was met with a certain hesitation in England with the question of what nationality are you? British or English? Perhaps the lack of respect for this saint is tantamount to the confusion. Our other 3 comrades in the union know exactly who they are.

This is given more credence by the GB world cup Olympic football team who it appears now will be represented by English players only after the withdrawal of the 3 remaining football associations.

Football Association of Wales CEO Jonathan Ford has said:

"Ultimately, we want to ensure that we are protected, both now and in the future, and to ensure that we have a Welsh team competing at the highest level possible, representing our country going forth in the European Championships and World Cup."

"I don't want that to change and I'm sure English fans don't want it to change, either."

"Let's be honest [if we combined for the Olympics] there wouldn't be an England team any more, there wouldn't be a Scotland team or a Northern Ireland team."

"So, I think the majority of people in Wales want to see a Welsh team carrying on in football and competing at the highest possible level."

According to collarandcuff.co.uk Marketing Director Tony James, this patriotism is represented in sales of flag cufflinks. These shirt accessories are on the rise especially with the recent events around the world.

James said “There is a demand of recognition of your identity and as always it’s a demand for cufflink flags of Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England that outsells all other countries.

He added “The support in England for a national day is without doubt......just see the reaction when we reach the world cup....its fever pitch...regardless of the result....England re-groups”.

To celebrate St Georges day Collar and Cuff are offering a 10% discount from all its cufflinks and accessory ranges. Quote “collar10”
