Boca Raton, FL – Hollander Law Firm supports National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The National Safety Council (NSC) {http://www.nsc.org/Pages/Home.aspx} and FocusDriven (thttp://www.focusdriven.org/index.aspx) eam up each April to promote National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Distracted driving is any non-driving activity a person engages in that has the potential to distract him or her from the primary task of driving and increase the risk of crashing.  Examples of distracted driving can include using a cell phone, texting, eating and drinking, talking to passengers, grooming, reading a map or using a navigation system, and using the radio/changing music.

According to NSC, distracted driving kills at least 5,500 people each year and the number one distraction behind the wheel is cell phone use. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows (http://www.distraction.gov/):

• At any given daylight moment, less than 1 percent of drivers are actually texting on a phone, while about 9 percent of drivers are actually talking on phones.
• Of the 23 percent of crashes involving cell phone use each year, only 2 percent involve texting – the other 21 percent involved cell phone conversations.

Today 30 states, the District of Columbia, and Guam ban text messaging for all drivers. 8 states, the District of Columbia, and the Virgin Islands prohibit all drivers from using handheld cell phones while driving. To see if your state has a ban on texting laws vist: http://www.distraction.gov/state-laws/index.html.

The government, car manufacturers, wireless industry and other companies are researching how to keep drivers safe including sensors and warnings to detect when driver action is needed and human factors research to guide the selection of appropriate warning timing and interface requirements for how to alert an inattentive driver. While much of this new technology is years from being standard in automobiles it includes things like roadway or lane departures, crash avoidance, hands-free driving and phone apps like Sprint’s new anti-distracted driving app (http://content.usatoday.com/communities/driveon/post/2011...) , that will let customers locks out most use of their mobile phones while driving.

We encourage parents to complete the Parent-Teen Driving Contract (http://www.distraction.gov/files/get-involved/Parents/Parent-Teen_Contract.pdf) with their children. As parents, we have great influences on teen behavior and keeping our children safety is a top priority. To lead by example, we also ask that parents complete the Parent Phone & Texting Driving Policy (http://www.hollanderlawfirm.com/files/hlf-adultphoneagreement1.pdf) .
