April 2, 2011 - PRLog -- According to a recent survey before the annual session of the National People's Congress in Feb. 2011, nearly 70 percent of Chinese consumers expressed objections to genetically modified food, including rice, oil and soymilk. After that, on the annual sessions, members of the national committee of CPPCC had a heated debate on the topic of “Is GM food a ecology helper or a potential killer” since the 12th Five-Year Plan announced to plant genetically modified crops according to related laws. The world displayed different attitudes to genetically food these years. At this very moment, China’s dynamic on GM food will surely attracts the world’s attention.

A recent survey conducted by CCM in its Glyphosate China Monthly Report in March 2011, has shown that most professionals deem that the planting of global GM crops is still the main driving force of future glyphosate demand growth. From the monthly report, the resistance did   not exert its effects on glyphosate industry until now. The January 2011 saw the significant increase of glyphosate export price . The glyphosate market remains stable in March 2010, while the export of glyphosate WSG (Water Soluble Granule) formulations has enjoyed a 24.31% growth in 2010.

At present, the hard fact is that consumers' war against genetically modified food is unfolding in China. So, how will that influence the development of glyphosate?

When Monsanto first exported genetically modified soy to Europe in 1996, it roused minor resistance among consumers. But the protests grew as time went by, it eventually gained support from farming organizations, environmental non-governmental organizations and restaurants.

Over the past years, the planting of GM crops has significantly increased herbicide and pesticide use on corn, soybeans and cotton which also adds to high toxic burden on the environment. It has been identified that all GM soys have considerable high glyphosate residue levels, which causes a series of serious harm to animals and continues safety and healthy survival and reproduction of mankind

China has drafted strict regulations and deployed a rigorous mechanism to make GM safe and legal. Although public opinion in China tends to be suspicious of genetically modified food, engineered soy bean oil and corn now account for a considerable share of the food found in the Chinese market. Special focus on GM crop is definitely necessary in the development of glyphosate.
