“RUINED” - A Special Mother’s Day Fundraiser

The Friends of the Congo in partnership with the Arena Stage the Mead center for American Theatre and the DC Arts and Humanities Council presents a Mother's Day Fundraiser on Sunday May 8, 2011 dedicated to the women of the Congo.

PRLog - Apr. 2, 2011 - WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Starting at 5:30 pm, the event will open with a celebratory reception featuring African music, Congolese food, followed by an evening showing of the Pulitzer award winning play, RUINED, and closing the evening with a panel discussion of Congolese women.

Ruined is a compelling story about women's courage and grace in overcoming sexual violence in the midst of the conflict zone in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The playwright, Lynn Nottage, is the second African American woman in history to win a Pulitzer for the play, which has been picked by Oprah Winfrey for a movie adaptation.

Honoring the women on this special Mother’s day, we will celebrate the human dignity of the Congolese women and their resilience in combating enormous odds in their fight for peace, stability and growth.

The fundraiser is open to the public. To purchase tickets, please visit http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/167649.

Connecting through our common humanity, be present at this momentous occasion as the heart of Africa comes to Arena Stage the Mead Center for American Theater.
