For more than a decade, Imam Abdullah has counseled young adults, women, and LGBT Muslims. The website is a response to the growing cry for help in the community.
“There are Muslims, their partners and families across all ages, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicities, educational background, geographical locales, who need support in their quest to find understanding within their Islamic faith,” says the imam.
His secret is that he interprets the Qur’an “ from an inclusive point of view. I am supportive of gender equality between men and women, womens' rights. children's rights, queer Muslim rights and their full acceptance in the Ummah,” Imam Abdullah says.
The mission of the website is to compassionately respond to the “ever-increasing demands on modern Muslims living in non-Muslim countries,” says the imam.
One of the services he offers is marrying couples who otherwise wouldn’t get support from the mainstream spiritual leadership such as women marrying outside the faith, LGBT persons, or those who wish to have an alternative wedding.
But the website is also a way to build bridges with the larger public. One of the services offered is the ability to book the imam for speaking engagements. Having lectured all over the world, the imam uses his “experience in Islamic law (Shari’ah)
Imam Abdullah, who was born in the United States, believes in a faith without borders. Through the website, he hopes to reach a larger audience in an efficient way. The audio and video section of the website are meant for those around the world who can’t benefit from having the imam in their locale. Planned projects include a Q&A series that will address contemporary challenges for the communities around the world.
