April 1, 2011 - PRLog -- With only one of the three leading mobile operators publishing updated subscriber figures, BMI has been unable to provide complete 2010 results this quarter; although the figures from market leader Claro, which had been published at the time of writing, are a good indication of general market trends.

There is a new player in Argentina's mobile market. MVNO Nuestro, which has been operating on Telecom Personal's network since Q410, brings added competition to the market, particularly as Nuestro provides a very low-cost prepaid offering. One other player could join the fray during 2011, too, as Telecentro received authorisation to provide mobile communications services. It is still not clear whether Telecentro will opt for a low risk MVNO strategy, or if it will submit a tender for spectrum later in the year.

Other mobile developments include two trials of LTE technology taking place, one trial by Telecom Personal and Huawei Technologies in Cordoba, and another by Movistar and NEC in the Buenos Aires area. All operators report that demand for smartphones is high, and value-added services are driving revenues upwards. In addition, mobile number portability is expected before the end of the year, and the prospect of this will see operators working to gain subscriber loyalty.

In broadband, fears that Fibertel - owned by Grupo Clarin - would have its licence revoked by November 2010 were undermined when a Buenos Aires court overturned the decision. While this may be a victory for Clarin, which is a powerful media group in frequent confrontation with President Cristina Fernandez's administration, the group has faced new problems as the government has publicly claimed it will attempt to prevent Clarin's pay-TV group from introducing a 16% increase in subscription fees. Fibertel was also trumped by the launch of Arnet Turbo, from Telecom Personal, a broadband offering with speeds of 7MB, 1MB above Fibertel's top offering.

Other developments include a bilateral agreement signed between Argentina and Chile's governments in February 2011, whereby the two countries agree to share the costs of expanding broadband coverage, with interconnecting network points where different operators' networks converge. BMI welcomes such a move as deployment costs can slow the expansion of broadband into rural areas; such an agreement ensures the expenses are lowered.
