Market Report, "Indonesia Insurance Report Q2 2011", published

Recently published research from Business Monitor International, "Indonesia Insurance Report Q2 2011", is now available at Fast Market Research

PRLog - Mar. 31, 2011 - Key Insights On Indonesia's Insurance Sector

In this report, actual data is used for 2009 and estimates for 2010 have been update to allow for the latest company reports and data released for that year. We estimate total premiums in 2010 of IDR112,160,731mn. This includes non-life premiums of IDR33,672,617mn and life premiums of IDR78,488,114mn. In 2015, the corresponding figures are forecast to be IDR332,773,415mn, IDR88,239,220mn and IDR244,534,195mn. In terms of the key drivers that underpin our forecasts, we expect non-life penetration to rise from 0.54% of GDP in 2010 to 0.79% in 2015, and for life density to increase from US$35 per capita to US$115 over the same period. The compound annual growth rates for the life and non-life sectors are estimated at 21% and 26% respectively. BMI's proprietary Insurance Business Environment Rating for Indonesia is 53.7.

As in previous quarters, we have ranked major players in each of the two main insurance segments as they are seen by the organisation providing the data (usually the regulator and/or trade associations). In Indonesia, the three largest non-life companies - in terms of gross written premiums - are PT Asuransi Jasa Indonesia, PT Asuransi Sinar Mas and PT Asuransi Astra Buana, whose market shares were 10.3%, 10.2% and 7.3%, respectively in 2009. In the life segment, the leaders were PT Asuransi Jiwa Mega Life, PT Asuransi Jiwa Sinar Mas and PT Prudential Life Insurance, whose market shares were 17.2%, 15.5% and 10.5%. Over time, we hope to derive insights from observing how market shares change. We emphasise, however, that a decline in share of gross written premiums is not automatically a negative indicator, and indeed is often the result of a deliberate corporate decision to focus on more profitable business lines.

In this report we also provide breakdowns of the insurance sector by line - again, from the point of view of the regulator or trade associations. The largest non-life lines were property, motor and marine cargo, which accounted for 33.9%, 28.6% and 7.3% of total non-life premiums respectively. We should be able to use this information to bring greater sophistication to our forecasting process in the coming quarters.
