March 30, 2011 - PRLog -- In times when young people can find it difficult to find employment, the Gramon Career Education Program gives students valuable life skills they can use when they enter the workforce. This year, the program is off to a productive start with students exploring careers and opportunities by shadowing school employees who work in the front office, kitchen, and physical education program.

The Gramon School in Fairfield, N.J. is a state-approved high school for students who require individual attention and learning programs to achieve success. Gramon students typically need support for emotional, behavioral and/or academic difficulties. At the Gramon School, special needs students are provided with a structured and supportive environment in a traditional high school culture to help foster academic, social and emotional growth.

As part of the Career Education Program, students learn about the everyday tasks performed in the school’s front office. In addition, student helpers in the physical education program serve as models for younger children and encourage activity. These activities serve to build confidence, pride and initiative in students and allow them to see themselves as contributing members of society.

Students are also spend time in the school’s kitchen to learn important health policies, sanitation procedures and how to multi-task while gaining knowledge about responsibilities that may be expected of them when they leave Gramon.

“Preparing our students to become responsible, adaptable and productive members of the community after they graduate from the Gramon School is our mission,” said Kalle Gerritz, Executive Director of the Gramon Family of Schools. “By familiarizing students with workforce responsibilities, the Career Education Program offers students key lessons that they need when they enter the workforce.”

Gerritz also said that this program, among others at Gramon School, addresses the students’ social and emotional needs as well as their academic needs.
