New market study, "Jordan Telecommunications Report Q2 2011", has been published

New Fixed Networks market report from Business Monitor International: "Jordan Telecommunications Report Q2 2011"

March 29, 2011 - PRLog -- The wave of political disturbances in Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria, which started in early 2011 have had a ripple effect throughout the Middle East, and Jordan has not been exempt from this. While it is too early to evaluate what impact this unrest will have on the region's economy and how far it will extend into Jordan, it is clear potential investors will be hesitant to enter the region. Jordan does boast relative stability, although the fact that opposition party the Islamic Action Front boycotted November 2010's parliamentary elections indicates there is a sense of political unease.

A lack of published financial reports from Jordan's telecoms operators means BMI has not updated its mobile data beyond September 2010 - when some figures were already estimated. BMI had access to new data published by the regulator TRC, outlining broad category trends for internet use, mobile subscribers and fixed-line numbers. Some interesting trends emerge from the regulator's figures: the growth of WiMAX continues to increase at a rapid rate and other' internet subscribers have also posted important increases, climbing from 1,447 subscribers in Q210 to 7,428 in Q310. BMI believes these additions are a direct result of the introduction of 3G technology.

In February 2011 Orange Jordan reached the end of its year of exclusive rights to be the only mobile operator offering 3G services in the country. Early figures are disappointing, with subscriber numbers in the region at 150,000. However, the fact that rival operator Zain is already testing its own 3G network and aims to commercially launch it in April 2011, indicates there is scope for growth.

Meanwhile, Xpress asked the Jordanian government for help with restructuring. According to press reports, the operator suspended all prepaid mobile services in October 2010 and suspended postpaid services outside of two major cities, while it focuses on finding a new investor for the firm.

In the fixed-line market, Jordan Telecom continues to dominate, although the prospect of change is ahead. ICT minister Marwan Juma, announced to the regional press that Jordan will enforce local loop unbundling in 2011, enabling other operators to enter the market before the end of 2011. TRC data for Q310 reveals there were 316,844 active residential phone lines and 180,588 business lines. In total, the number of fixed lines declined by 1.3% compared to Q309.
