Dr. Mark G. McKenney, World-Renowned Trauma Physician, Joins Team as Medical Director

MIAMI, FL – March 28, 2011 – Kendall Regional Medical Center announced the addition of Dr. Mark G. McKenney as Medical Director of the new South Florida Trauma Center at Kendall Regional (Provisional Level II).  Housed within its current facility, the new adult trauma center will be the second in Miami-Dade County, providing a much needed service for the community.  Dr. McKenney, until recently, was the Medical Director at Ryder Trauma Center and Chief of Surgery at University of Miami Hospital.  Dr. McKenney, a professor of surgery at the University of South Florida, will put his unparalleled expertise to good use for the South Florida community, leading a team of trauma experts committed to saving lives.

"The addition of this Provisional Level II South Florida Trauma Center, which we are targeting to open later this year, is the logical next step in Kendall Regional Medical Center’s strategic plan to serve the community with excellence by providing the very best patient care,” said Lee Chaykin, CEO of Kendall Regional Medical Center. “I am very proud of the consistent efforts put forth by our medical staff and employees to improve the services we provide the South Florida community.  We will continue to identify needs in the community and address them by making appropriate investments and fulfilling our goals and objectives by always putting the patient’s needs first.”

The Florida Department of Health has identified a need for a total of six adult trauma programs in the Miami-Dade and Monroe county areas. Opening the second adult trauma center in Miami will benefit the community in dramatic ways, including reducing the mortality rate for severe injuries (vs. a non-trauma emergency room) by 15%, as noted in the 2009 Florida Trauma System Annual Report.

South Florida Trauma Center at Kendall Regional (Provisional Level II) will be part of a statewide trauma network formed through the relationship of the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) and the University of South Florida (USF), improving access to quality trauma care and services across Florida. The initiative enables five HCA hospitals to meet local trauma needs through an affiliation with a major academic university and medical school.

"We firmly believe this HCA/USF Trauma Network is a critical service for our community, helping save lives through our geographic presence and collaborative approach," said Dr. James M. Hurst, Chief Trauma Medical Director for the HCA/USF Trauma Network and a USF professor of surgery. "The new provisional level II South Florida Trauma Center at Kendall Regional will be well-suited to help carry out this important mission in South Florida."

According to the Florida Department of Health, “the trauma center mortality rate due to injuries in Florida has decreased from 6.5 percent in 2002, to 4.8 percent in 2009. These positive trends are the result of additional trauma centers established in the underserved areas, also providing timely, effective intervention for life-threatening injury, thus reducing complications, decreasing the length of hospital stay, reducing readmissions, and reducing community reintegration and long-term care costs.”

The South Florida Trauma Center at Kendall Regional (Provisional Level II) will look to achieve this status by meeting an extensive list of major requirements, ranging from onsite facilities, to a helicopter landing pad, to staff training and certification.  Anyone rushed through the trauma doors will have qualified surgeons, nurses and specialists in house, on-call and promptly available with 24-hour service, seven days a week. The entire trauma surgeon staff is board certified in both critical care and surgery.

“I am pleased to be joining the Kendall Regional team as we embark on this exciting journey to provide members of our community with live-saving options during their most harrowing times,” said Dr. McKenney. “This community has been in dire need of a second adult trauma center for quite some time, and I’m proud to be a part of the team making this a reality.”

Trauma Medical Director Dr. McKenney is undeniably the most qualified person to assume this important new role for the community, having recently come from the Ryder Trauma Center with a varied and illustrious career.  Among his notable achievements, Dr. McKenney has published several books, written dozens of articles for medical journals, has served as a Professor of Medicine, is Board Certified in a range of areas (including Surgery, Trauma and Cardiac Care) and is educated in a host of disciplines, including holding an MBA (University of Miami), M.D. (University of Michigan) and a BS (Michigan State).
