March 28, 2011 - PRLog -- When your first major appearance in the Hip-Hop arena is a performance at the Core DJ Retreat, one of the music industry’s largest platforms to showcase hot talent, it is both a blessing and a curse.  The blessing is found in the ability to rock a stage in front of an influential crowd, the curse is that one’s expectations going forward are beyond measure.  However, for gifted Mexican rapper Cartel MGM, the size of his audience and venue may change, but his grit, grind and hustle remain the same.

Only one year into the rap game and already blazing, Cartel has collaborated with Mizay Entertainment’s Waka Flocka Flame on the street-certified mixtape Salute or Shoot Me 2.5 hosted by DJ Ace and Trap-A-Holics.  While the title may suggest conflicting meanings, it was produced with the intent of having a positive impact towards the elimination of violence within the Mexican and African-American communities; a project Cartel is proud to have initiated.

Born in East Los Angeles, CA, which is known for its rampant gang activity, Cartel’s family moved to Atlanta, GA to build a more quality life free from the inner-city perils; but while the youngster’s address was new, his mentality wasn’t.  Cartel was living the fast life- all gas and no brakes; that is until he experienced a personal tragedy.  “I lost one of my homie’s to some nonsense, which is actually how I got my start.  He was so passionate about  music it’s like when he died, I inherited his motivation.  So I picked up where he left off and been keeping his spirit alive ever since.  Now that I’m here, it’s no turning back.”

The 21 year-old, who counts artists and groups such as Spanish lyricist SPM, Dr. Dre, Eazy E and NWA as influences because he connected to their music, is looking to do the same with his fan base on Courtesy of Cartel, his sophomore mixtape.  “I named it that because I’m giving the gift of music to the people so they can relate to me and hopefully be that artist they can see themselves in.”  Listeners can expect sounds from some of the industry’s most noted producers including DC Da Beat Man and Trap Hitaz, as well as 100% Cartel, although depending on the track and his mood, often varies.  He can go from zero-to-crunk in seconds, one of the many reasons why Mizay Entertainment CEO Debra Antney inked Cartel to a management deal.  “He’s a special artist that people will definitely be hearing a lot from,” says Antney.  “I take pride in picking winners and so far, my track record speaks for itself.”
