Dr. June Werdlow Rogers to Deliver Central Penn Commencement Address

March 28, 2011 - PRLog -- Dr. June Werdlow Rogers, an educator, motivational speaker and retired special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) New England division, will deliver the commencement address to the 129th graduating class of Central Penn College on May 6. The 2011 class of more than 400 eligible bachelor’s and associate degree students are from Central Penn’s Harrisburg, Lancaster and Lehigh locations, as well as its bachelor’s degree completion program with McCann School of Business & Technology campuses. Also, Hector Richard Ortiz will receive a Doctor of Humane Letters at the ceremony in recognition of his work and passion in the fields of education and social services, as well as his commitment to creating a better understanding of poverty, diversity and inclusion in the region.

Milano, president of Central Penn College. “Her journey to success from beat cop to special agent in charge of the DEA is a great message of inspiration for our graduating class. In addition, her strong public service career will remind graduates how they can fulfill the college’s mission to serve as contributing members of society. I am quite pleased to have a professional of Dr.Werdlow Rogers caliber at Central Penn’s commencement.”

In her commencement address, Dr. Werdlow Rogers will emphasize that individual and collective success is intertwined and she will urge the 2011 graduating class to act upon this transparent truth, as well as approach their jobs with a heart of true service.

“It is an honor for me to have an opportunity to inspire, encourage and congratulate the graduates,” said Werdlow Rogers.

Holding a Ph.D. in criminal justice and criminology from the University of Maryland, Werdlow Rogers has 28 years of law enforcement experience from the DEA, Detroit police department and Central Michigan University’s Department of Public Safety. She is the author of “Cracking the Double Standard Code: A Guide to Successful Navigation in the Workplace” and “Becoming Ethically Marketable: A Guide for Criminal Justice Majors and Recruits.”

In March, 2010, Werdlow Rogers was named WIFLE’s (Women in Federal Law Enforcement) regular columnist for the PoliceOne.com online law enforcement resource.  She has written numerous articles on ethics, leadership and victimization avoidance, and about the dangers of drug use and drug trafficking. She is often tapped for national speaking engagements, training seminars and media interviews.

Werdlow Rogers is a member of WIFLE, the Michigan Women’s Foundation and the National Association of Black Narcotics Agents (NABNA). Werdlow Rogers serves on the 2010-2011 Steering Committee of Michigan’s A Future Not a Past, a campaign against the commercial sexual exploitation of children.

Werdlow Rogers educates community groups about the dangers of involvement with drug dealers and in 2007, her efforts led to a nationally recognized public awareness effort aimed at reducing pharmaceutical drug abuse.

Announced at the ceremony, special recognition will be given to the Todd A. Milano Faculty Excellence Award winner and three students of the year will be named student of the year. The college will graduate its first students from Central Penn Lehigh Valley and a partnership with The McCann School of Business & Technology.

A Doctor of Humane Letters will also be issued to Hector Richard Ortiz. Ortiz is a community liaison and contract manager in Dauphin County, office of Human Services. He holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, a master’s degree in diplomacy, and a doctorate degree in international relations from the Guayaquil State University. Ortiz is the founder and former President of Estamos Unidos de Pennsylvania, a grass roots organization created to promote cultural awareness and post-secondary opportunities for children.

Ortiz is former president of the Harrisburg Keystone Rotary Club, assistant governor of Rotary International, District 7390, and district governor nominee-designee for the period 2013-2014. He serves on several community organizations boards and committees, including the board of trustees of Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) and the board of directors of Leadership Harrisburg Area. Ortiz is also an associate member of the Diversity Committee of the National Association of Community College Trustees. He is member of the Harrisburg Young Professionals; co-founder and current vice president of the Latino/Hispanic Professional Association, and one of the founders and charter president of the Latino Hispanic American Community Center of the Greater Harrisburg Area.

Ortiz is chair of the Dauphin County Diversity Forum, advisory Panel; chair of the Dauphin County Integrated Service Plan, Cultural Competence Committee; coordinator of the monthly Dauphin County Diversity Network Forum and Poverty Forum; and member of the United Way Latino Services Task Force and Dauphin County Cultural Celebration Task Force.

He is also member of the Capital Region Chamber of Commerce, Business Diversity Council and board member of the Pinnacle Health Foundation and Pinnacle Health Annual Gifts Committee. Additionally, Ortiz serves on the tri-county Fatherhood Coalition and tri-county Emergency Food Management. Hector is a motivational speaker and a consultant in diversity and leadership development, as well as communication, translation and interpretation services.

Ortiz and his wife, Marisol, are foster parents, and run a small business offering consultation in communication, motivational leadership, diversity awareness, cultural sensitivity and poverty. Ortiz is the President of H.R. Ortiz Communication and Consulting Services and author of “The Creative Energy of Positive Thinking: A Basic Approach to the Genuine Concept of Happiness.”

According to Central Penn’s most recent One-Year Graduate Survey, approximately 88.2 percent of the college’s graduates were employed in their chosen field or continuing their education within one year of graduation. The Central Penn College commencement ceremony will begin at 8 p.m., Friday, May 6 at the Forum, located at 5th and Walnut Streets, Harrisburg. Tickets are required for admission.
