March 27, 2011 - PRLog -- Commuter cyclist, Gerry McBride from Marske by the Sea, in the north east of England is aiming to persuade motorists to ditch their cars one day each month and encourage them to use alternative transport. He has called the initiative, ‘Don’t drive on the 5’, the 5 being for the 5th of each month.

Gerry recalls being given a bike by his daughter’s boyfriend back in the Spring of 2007, which he duly propped up in the garage to gather dust. Then, in November of 2007 decided to cycle home from work, after first taking the bike on the train. That experience almost put paid to his cycling, as when he returned home from this first epic journey of 12 miles or so, the best he could manage was to walk like John Wayne and lie on the settee grunting and requesting lightly buttered toast to be fed to him!

In 2011, and over 40lbs (18kgs) lighter, Gerry cycles the 24 mile round trip to work up to four times per week. He said “I feel healthier, have a great appetite, and my blood pressure and cholesterol levels are good” He added, “If you can ditch the car for just one day, it could change your life, help the environment and save you money!’

Gerry has set up a website, www.dontdriveonthe5.org which will be updated with useful information about alternative transport and will provide space for individuals to tell their stories.
The first don’t drive on the 5 day is 5th April 2011. Find us on Facebook!
