March 25, 2011 - PRLog -- Licorice was introduced to England in the Middle Ages by a Pontefract Monastery known for crafting delicious sweets and its popularity quickly spread.  Throughout history, ancient civilizations and many other cultures have found Licorice to be an important part of either their food preparations or natural medicinal practices. Even Alexander the Great believed in the beneficial properties of licorice and gave it to his troops while marching because of its thirst quenching qualities.

Gimbal’s Fine Candies first started making their All Natural Licorice Scotties around 1904 in downtown San Francisco.   Alexander Gimbal, the company founder, owned two Scotty Dogs and the family story passed down for four generations is that it was Alexander’s dogs that originally inspired the adorable Scottie shaped candies.

Gimbal’s Fine Candies is unique in how they make their All Natural Licorice Scotties in that they employ the starch molding process. This process, which includes cooking batches in small kettles and then pressing the shape of the Scottie into a bed of starch before pouring the hot candy into the indentation, allows Gimbal’s to make the Licorice in their irresistible Scottie shape. This starch molding method results in the licorice having an extremely tender bite and excellent flavor release. Most manufacturers extrude licorice which limits their choice of shapes and produces a tougher textured final product.

“You won’t find a better licorice candy out there,” said Karin Vollrath, sales and marketing director for Gimbal’s Fine Candies. “Our Scotties are handcrafted candies made with real licorice root and pure anise, and they have incredibly soft and delicious texture. All Natural Licorice Scotties contain no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives.”

The mouth watering All Natural Licorice Scotties are just one of the delicious products from Gimbal’s Fine Candies and offer the same unbeaten quality and value their other products bring to consumers. Gimbal’s also produces Cherry Lovers® Candies, Honey Lovers® Candies, Gourmet Jelly Beans and chewy cinnamon LavaBalls®.  The Gimbal’s production and packaging facilities are unique because they are 100% free of the “Major Eight” food allergens that cause over 90% of food allergies. Any foods or products containing those major eight ingredients aren’t even allowed on the premises. Additionally, no high fructose corn syrup is used in any of their candies.

Gimbal’s Fine Candies was founded in 1898 in bustling downtown San Francisco. The company survived the 1906 earthquake and resulting fires and four generations later, all of the staff at Gimbal’s remains just as passionate about confections as it was over 100 years ago. From old-time favorites to innovative new candies, everything Gimbal’s creates is made with pride in USA.
