Amity Insurance offers tips on identity theft prevention during tax season

Tax season can leave people vulnerable to identity theft without proper precautions.

March 25, 2011 - PRLog -- With the deadline for filing 2010 taxes still a couple weeks ago, personal information is floating around everywhere and identity thieves are working overtime to steal it, but by following a few basic steps, you can avoid the nightmare of identity theft, according to Amity Insurance Agency, Inc., the region's leading full service agency.

First, select your tax preparer with the utmost of care.  Seek referrals from family, friends or colleagues before signing on with someone new to you.

Protect your Social Security number; never give it out unless absolutely necessary.

Beware of unsolicited e-mail messages claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service.  These messages often contain links that automatically download software designed to steal your passwords and account information.

Be careful about the websites you use.  If you utilize online tax services, make sure that you are dealing with a legitimate site; clone websites can be easily set up by scammers with the sole purpose of harvesting your personal information.

It is indeed the time of the season when identify theft can be ripe for the taking, but by following these tips, you will be far less at risk.
