New market study, "Egypt Commercial Banking Report Q2 2011", has been published

March 25, 2011 - PRLog -- Bond Portfolio To Boost Profitability  Egypt's banking sector will continue to perform relatively well in 2011, with profitability throughout the  industry bolstered by an ongoing shift into government securities. That said, new lending into the  economy will likely remain anaemic for the foreseeable future, which will do little to bolster the country's  underlying growth prospects in 2011. The introduction of a new government-run scheme designed to  provide low-cost loans to public sector workers is an encouraging step in terms of bringing previously  untapped segments of society into the commercial banking industry.  Egypt's banking sector continues to perform relatively well, with the ongoing expansion in banks' bond  portfolios bolstering underlying profitability in the industry. According to latest data from the Central  Bank of Egypt (CBE), the banking sector's aggregate bond portfolio came in at EGP432bn (US$75bn)  through October 2010, marking a 27.5% year-on-year increase. As the accompanying chart shows, bonds'  share of the industry's total assets has been steadily increasing since early 2008, and now accounts for a  near record high of 33.0%. With the government of President Hosni Mubarak having hitherto showed no  signs of diminishing its appetite for issuing new debt in an effort to finance its spending program ahead of  presidential elections, we expect this trend to continue unabated in 2011.
