Tomaquag Museum Director to speak at UMass panel on Cultural Sovereignty

Tomaquag Museum Director Loren Spears will speak at a U Mass panel on Cultural Sovereignty: presenting on education and its impact on cultural sovereignty, March 24 at 5:30 p.m in Healey Library.
 
March 23, 2011 - PRLog -- Lorén Spears will be part of a panel on Cultural Sovereignty at UMASS Boston, Healey Library, on March 24 from 5:30-8 p.m. She will present on Education and its impact on cultural sovereignty.
“Exercises in Cultural Sovereignty:  Reclaiming, Preserving, and Perpetuating Native Cultures in New England.”
Spears, member of the Narragansett Indian Tribe, graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1988 with a Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education. She received her Masters in Education from the University of New England in 2002.
Spears is the Executive Director of Tomaquag Indian Memorial Museum (TIMM) and was the founder of Nuweetooun School in 2003 and led the school for seven years. She developed the curriculum that focused on Native history & culture and will discuss the importance of culturally relevant education for Native peoples. She is also a board member of the South County Tourism Council.
