On the brighter side, there were no serious labour conflicts in 2010 like those experienced by General Motors Company (GM) and Mitsubishi Motors in 2009. The supply of foreign currency was also much smoother last year than in 2009. As such, we expect carmakers to increase production over 7% y-o-y in 2011, which we believe will be followed by average annual growth of 9% y-o-y growth for the remainder of our forecast period, taking 2015 output to 158,525 units, still below pre-crisis levels.
In turn, the improved availability of vehicles will drive up demand, with sales rising 18% y-o-y this year, to over 143,400 units. By the end of 2015, we expect total sales to reach 219,600 units. Much will, however, depend on whether carmakers have been able to significantly improve their production levels in line with the increased demand.
We, however, expect import restrictions to remain in place. On the other hand, we see little prospect of any significant increase in exports in 2011 after the market failed to export any vehicles last year.
MMC Automotriz, which assembles Mitsubishi Motors and Hyundai Motor vehicles was the only company to increase production in 2010, while the country's largest auto manufacturer GM just managed to match its output levels of 2009. Despite this, the US carmaker held on to its market leading position in the Venezuela with sales of nearly 51,000 units, giving it a more than a 40% share in the market. Other market participants such as Ford Motor, Toyota Motor and Chrysler also hold considerable market share in the new vehicle sales segment, but none are anywhere close to GM's level.
