Southwest Author Engages Middle Schoolers to Take on Big Issues

Author Robert Hunton believes students have a lot to offer on many of today’s problems—illegal immigration, drugs, bullying—and he’s asking them to prove it by publishing in “Coyote’s Howl.”

March 22, 2011 - PRLog -- Retired teacher Robert Hunton is touring his native state of Vermont this month to talk with students about the issues raised in his new novel, “Gift of the Desert Dog,” and to submit their written work for online publication.

“Giving students a voice is another learning adventure,” says Hunton, who lives in Tucson, Arizona. “The writing contest is a natural progression of the themes and borderland issues raised in the book.” Hunton still carries a passion to inspire students, even after a 32 year career as a seventh and eighth grade language arts and social studies teacher in the Colchester, Vermont School District.

The online collection titled “Coyote’s Howl for Young Writers” allows teachers to submit class work or students to enter direct. Students aged nine to 14 are eligible for the no fee contest. Prize winners will be chosen by student and adult raters, the author and Open Books Press beginning this spring.

There is no requirement to read "Gift of the Desert Dog" to enter, and doing so is not likely to give the writer an unfair advantage in the contest. Contest details and registration are at: http://howl.openbookspress.com/

“Gift of the Desert Dog” is a testament to the inspiring love and dedication shared by two members of a remote Tohona O’odham reservation family, and a tribute to the greatness of their desert nation.
