The LAMP Teaches Brooklyn Youth About News

Workshop teaches elementary students about how, why news media are made

March 22, 2011 - PRLog -- NEW YORK, NY: The LAMP (Learning About Multimedia Project) will take up residency at Brooklyn’s P.S. 107 beginning in late March, working with fourth- and fifth-graders to create their own print and video news packages and better understand news and journalism.

“Kids today are exposed to a lot of news about current events, and it’s critical that they understand what goes into reporting those stories,” said Katherine Fry, Ph.D., Education Director of The LAMP and professor of media studies at Brooklyn College. “Creating their own news videos and writing their own articles is a great way for them to learn hands-on how news is made, and how they can engage with news to understand the world around them.”

Students will learn basic principles of media literacy, especially news literacy, as they learn the processes of news production, including choices made in newsgathering, reporting and distribution. Emphasis will be on comparing print news to video news, and how images and sound shape information. Students will produce video news packages, and in the process learn to think critically about news.
