Faces of Courage

(Tampa, FL) - Perhaps no nonprofit organization is more aptly named than Faces of Courage. And few are providing more for their members.

Faces of Courage, based in Tampa, FL, is providing life enriching experiences to kids, women and families touched by all types of cancer and/or blood disorders.

At the forefront are the Women of Color weekend camps that Faces of Courage puts on, making it the first organization in the nation to tailor such camps, making Faces of Courage a leader in minority outreach and education. Current enrollment for programs is 3,800 families and all programs are provided at no cost to the participants.

As with any organization dedicated to help others, Faces of Courage has a founder whose passion and energy knows no bounds.

In this case it's Peggie Sherry, a two-time breast cancer survivor and also the survivor of a horrific motorcycle accident that left her shoulder and arm rebuilt with Titanium.

A week after completing a year of rehab for her arm, Sherry took a nearly 2,000-mile motorcycle ride around the state of Florida as a breast cancer outreach. She also had the great privilege to ride the final leg of the Lance Armstrong Tour of Hope into Washington, DC.

Sherry says the name and meaning of the organization are synonymous. "The name is exactly what we see everyday when dealing with grown ups and children battling this horrid disease," she says. "You just cannot image what they face...not only their possible death, devastating treatments, side effects,  and disfiguring surgeries (but also) financial ruin and sometimes public shunning."

Enter Faces of Courage, which provides a sanctuary where those afflicted can "just be normal," in Sherry's words.

In 1997 Sherry became the Tampa Regional Director of a cancer camp headquartered in Upstate New York. In January 2004, that camp closed their Tampa office, Sherry took $110,000 of her inheritance and started Faces of Courage while herself under going her second battle with breast cancer. Her thoughts were "I have been working with these families for six years, we are like family, I just can't walk away and leave them with no camps....how could I? Camps are a beacon of hope in turbulent weather."

"We all understand because most of us have been there, and done that," Sherry says. "We've been to Hell, slapped the Devil on the face and are here to talk about it."
