March 22, 2011 - PRLog -- Whilst the relationship of British men and cooking has long been a topic for debate, new research from the UK’s leading discount website has revealed that common stereotype may be far from the truth.

In a new study, conducted by www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, it has been found that men are actually the ‘chief cook’ in just over half of UK households; with 52% of British males in co-habiting relationships claiming to do the ‘majority’ of household cooking.

The study was conducted as part of research into the eating habits of Britons, and 1, 451 men aged 18 and over in co-habiting relationships took part.

Respondents to the study were initially asked, “Who does the majority of household cooking in your home?” to which just over half, 52%, of men answered “I do.”  Of those who claimed to be chief cook, the majority, 56%, explained that it was because they were ‘better at cooking’ than their partner; whilst just under a third, 28%, labelled their own and their partner’s ‘schedules’ as the main reason why they took charge of the kitchen.

When asked how household chores should be divided, two thirds, 67%, of men answered that chores should be ‘split equally’ around the home. One in five, 19%, claimed that ‘women’ should do the majority of household chores; whilst just 14% thought that ‘men’ should take charge.

However, despite just over half of UK households having a man as ‘chief cook’; the majority of respondents, 62%, admitted that their female partner does the majority of grocery shopping for the home.

Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, commented on the findings:

“Given how many grocery and food related discounts we feature on the site, we’re always looking in to the food habits of people around the UK. It was really interesting to find that men are the ‘chief cooks’ in just over half of UK co-habiting households, particularly given what common stereotype would have you believe; but I think this merely reflects the changes in society over the past few decades.”

He continued:

“It’s great to see that so many men take charge of their family cooking, and clearly have confidence in their ability with so many claiming to be better cooks than their female partners. Modern work schedules and commitments indeed call for a much more equal division of chores around the home, and I think the results of this study reflect these changes in a positive light. It seems that men need to pick up the slack when it comes to grocery shopping though!”
