March 21, 2011 - PRLog -- Several Devon Prep Upper School and Middle School students won honors at the recent Southeastern Pennsylvania Science Olympiad Regional Competition held at Cabrini College. Juniors Ryan O'Shea and Adam Swift won a third place medal in the Dynamic Plant category in the high school division.  Seventh Graders Alex Damien and Shymal Patel won a fourth place medal in the Battery Buggy category in the middle school division.

In the Dynamic Plant competition participants were required to take a test on this year’s subject - the Earth's Fresh Waters. In the Battery Buggy event participants had to design and build a moving, battery-powered vehicle capable of traveling a specific distance around a bucket and stopping as close to the ending point as possible.

Nearly 35 high schools and 30 middle schools competed in the various science events at Cabrini College this year.

The Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of individual and team events, which students prepare for during the year. These challenging and motivational events are well balanced among the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers, and technology. Science Olympiad is a national non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of K-12 science education, increasing male, female and minority interest in science, creating a technologically literate workforce and providing recognition for outstanding achievement by both students and teachers.

Devon Prep is a private, Catholic, college preparatory school for young men in grades six through 12 conducted by the Piarist Fathers.  Nearly 300 students who hail from the five county Philadelphia area, attend Devon Prep’s 20 acre campus in Devon, Chester County.
