Trapped Moisture is an Invitation to Harmful Pests

Reports by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) show that trapped moisture is a threat to structural integrity and human health. Furthermore, trapped moisture draws destructive pests including termites.

March 21, 2011 - PRLog -- A recent report by the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that 75-80 percent of buildings’ structural issues are caused by trapped moisture.  Moisture can become trapped inside a building or home in a number of ways.  Most often, the culprits are inferior drainage due to improper grading, leaky pipes, and accumulated condensation due to poor ventilation.

On that note, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) points out that trapped moisture in homes can cause a plethora of issues that pose a danger to human health.  In particular, trapped moisture if gone unchecked can result in the growth of biological allergens like mold, which can in turn trigger adverse health effects and serious respiratory illness.

Moldy, moist conditions also are perfect for nuisance pests like earwigs, millipedes, and centipedes to flourish.  This also rings true for highly destructive insects like termites, which according to the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) cost American homeowners $5 billion in home damage and repairs each year.

“Subterranean termites, which are one of the most destructive species of termite, thrive here in the Raleigh area,” says Donnie Shelton, President & CEO of Triangle Pest Control.  “Subterranean termites also love moisture.  So a humid crawlspace or basement is an open invitation for these pests to invade and destroy your home.”

Preventing buildup of humidity and moisture is key to preventing the costly destruction caused by termites.  Triangle Pest Control offers a number of moisture control services to help homeowners thwart trapped moisture.  These include creating temporary vents to release built up humidity, building French drains to route water away from a foundation, as well as installing vapor barriers to prevent moisture seepage into your basement or crawlspace.

Shelton notes that investing in moisture prevention measures can translate to decreased financial burden and greater peace of mind in the future.

“By preventing trapped moisture now, homeowners can save themselves thousands of dollars in home repairs and pest extermination costs down the road.”
