New market study, "China Commercial Banking Report Q2 2011", has been published

PRLog (Press Release) - Mar. 21, 2011 - Implications Of The SHIBOR Surge  Interbank rates in China are still spiking across the board despite intervention measures by the People's  Bank of China (PBC), indicating a liquidity crunch in the Chinese banking sector. We expect further PBC  liquidity injections in the near term, but continue to see further interest rate hikes and reserve requirement  ratio hikes. We caution that the spike in funding costs may to some extent reflect fears of rising nonperforming  loans, and believe that local equities are poised for further downside.  The 1-month SHIBOR (Shanghai interbank offered rate) has spiked to 8.13% at the time of writing,  having doubled in just two weeks. Meanwhile, the 3-month rate is at its highest ever level at 5.25%, 300  basis points (bps) above 3-month deposit rates. In our view, the spike in rates reflects a lack of liquidity in  the Chinese banking system following the aggressive reserve requirement ratio (RRR) hikes seen over  recent months and the two interest rate hikes, as well as expectations of more to come. The situation is  made all the more severe by the traditionally liquidity-draining cash demand in the run up to Chinese  New Year.
