March 20, 2011 - PRLog -- The Boston-based duo “2” (Peter H. Bloom, flute and alto flute; Mary Jane Rupert, piano) will celebrate Women’s History Month with Music of American Women Composers, on Sunday, March 27 at 3:00 pm, McCormick Museum at Cantigny, 1S151 Winfield Road, Wheaton, IL 60189. Free event.  Parking fee applies.  Ticket distribution by lottery (limit 2 per person).  For reservations and information, call 630-260-8162.  Directions can be found at www.cantigny.org

The musicians will offer a captivating program of diverse repertoire from the late 19th century to the 21st century.  Works will include the magnificent but seldom-heard Sonata in A Minor Op 24 (1896) by Amy Beach; Sonata Op 22 by Marion Bauer (1931, written for viola and transcribed for alto flute), and Kleemation by Elizabeth Vercoe (a 2003 composition based on drawings by Paul Klee, with contrasting movements from quirky humor to compelling drama). Vercoe was praised by The Washington Post as "one of the most inventive composers working in America today."

Hailed for “beautiful phrasing, consummate duet passages, superb technical facility,” Bloom and Rupert have performed together for 20 years, appearing in venues across the globe.  Known as champions of American music, they’ve garnered consistent acclaim for vivid performances of music from the European baroque to 21st century America.  The duo is managed by Americas Musicworks www.americasmusicworks.com

Peter H. Bloom has given concerts from Boston to Bangkok and appears on 30 recordings from labels including Sony Classical, Dorian, Leo Records, Newport Classic, and others. Winner of the American Musicological Society’s coveted Noah Greenberg Award, he is a distinguished classical artist and a noted jazz player. The Boston Globe called his playing “a revelation for unforced sweetness and strength,” while JazzImprov praised his "exquisite melody."   He holds an MM in flute performance with distinction from New England Conservatory of Music.  Mary Jane Rupert, acclaimed as a classical pianist and harpist, has given solo recitals from Carnegie Hall to Beijing Concert Hall and has appeared with symphony orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout the United States.   She serves on the music faculties of Tufts University, Boston College and MIT.  Dr. Rupert holds a BM in Piano from Oberlin College, and an MM in Piano, MM in Harp and DM in Piano Performance and Music Literature from Indiana University.
